Goerge Boland Scholarship 2009

Thank you to the George Boland Scholarship Fund and the University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium for awarding me with this wonderful scholarship. The sum of $10,000 has come at a most important time, financially assisting me during my studies in London and further language study in the summer. This support is seeing me through my first year here in the UK and is giving me the chance to apply for and take up more musical opportunities than I could afford previously. Thank you so much again. I aim to keep working hard and becoming the very best performer I can possibly be.

The Guildhall School of Music and Drama

The end of my first term at Guildhall School of Music and Drama here in London is drawing close. It is such a wonderful university and the talent is very high. There are many classes to take in my course (Masters of Music) as well as rehearsals, coachings, lessons, auditions and concerts that need to try and find their place in each week. It's excitingly busy and there is always an audition or concert or class to sing in each week (if not, 2 or 3 times a week).

My singing teacher's name is Kathryn Harries. She is also the director of the National Opera Studio here in London. We are working on audition arias, roles and characterisation/acting through the music. She is a very lovely, confident and exciting person and I have really enjoyed working with her so far. Other than my small recital next week, we are concentrating on the opera school auditions coming up in early December and late January.

The weather hasn't been too rotten... yet. And I have finally discovered how to go about 'layering' to suit this city. Everywhere indoors is very warm and outside is very cold. Therefore; normal top + very big jacket and scarf = perfect! It's true, we talk about the weather all the time - because it keeps changing!

I am very excited about the concert I am going to on December 2nd. Phillipe Jaroussky, who is a French male Soprano, is singing at the Barbican! The Barbican is the large complex (like an apartment village with restaurants, cinemas, a church etc) where the Guildhall is situated. I can't wait to hear him live.

My apologies for not writing an entry for a while. I am only just starting to settle in because I have been working very hard and learning a lot of music as fast as I can! I will write these blogs more regularly now so you can see what I'm up to.
